This course will cover the following topics, taking Lang's algebra as our basic text.

Office hours: M 2-3, Tu 1-2, W 9-10.
There will be two take-home midterms and no final., and report on your exam when you turn it in who you collaborated with. (Of course you won't be penalized for collaborating but please follow these rules.) Grades will be based on the weekly homeworks and the two midterms.
The lecture of April 2 will not be attended by the first year graduate students, who are taking their quals. This lecture and first homework will be based on the material in the next bullet point.
The lectures will begin with Chapter 17 of Lang's Algebra on Friday, April 4.

You may work together on homeworks. The rules will be different for the take-home midterm.

Due Wednesday April 17: Exercises 1-5 in Ch.17 (p.661) of Lang.
First Takehome Midterm: This first takehome midterm consists of problems from Lang. I will grade these myself. The rules for this midterm are that you may work collaboratively only after you have first worked on the problems for six hours by yourself and tried every problem. Do the following problems. In Ch. XVI (p.647) do #4. In Ch. XVIII (p.722) do #1,2,3,6,16. Due Friday April 25 by 5 PM.
Due Monday, May 5: Compute the following character tables: Homework Due May 5
Due Wednesday, May 14: In Lang, Chapter 18 do numbers 4,5,7 and 15. Here are some more specific instructions for number 15, and a discussion of SL(2,3). Homework Due May 14. Revised May 12. There were two corrections: Problem 15 was previously described as Problem 14, and there is a typo in Problem 4. Described in the revised handout.
